Gaurav Bhattacharyya

Children don’t get to choose whether they are born into privilege or poverty. Nevertheless, that roll of the dice often determines their fate for generations to come. Education is the one catalyst that can help those on the unfortunate side of the spectrum to reach higher. But for most children born into poverty, education is unavailable or a luxury given the burden of working to help support their families.

As someone born in India, I saw firsthand the dire circumstances so many children had to endure, and also experienced firsthand the liberating power of education. Asha for Education is a non-profit organization working to bring socio-economic development in India through the education of underprivileged children. The funds raised by Asha go directly to support projects, including:

  • Rehabilitation and education for destitute orphans and child laborers
  • Vocational training centers for women
  • Education for tribal children
  • Day care centers for young children of working women
  • Day/night care centers providing shelter, food, supplementary education to children of commercial sex workers
  • Education and life skills education for adolescent girls and women
  • The Chicago Marathon 2020 will be my first marathon ever. I get tired even thinking about driving 26.2 miles, let alone running it! It is a daunting task, yet knowing that I will in some small way be contributing towards this awesome cause will get me through those long training runs and aching muscles.

I hope you will join me in supporting this great organization and improving the lives of these vulnerable children.
