Asha Chicago Supports as Projects Shift Focus from Education to Relief
Work for schools and community programs has been held at a standstill due to the Corona virus pandemic. The projects we support have not missed a beat — each program has pivoted to provide food and basic materials to the communities they serve.
With cases still on the rise in India, it is as critical as it was when shutdowns began to continue supporting these communities so that people can distance and stay safe. See how Asha Chicago is supporting these efforts.
Project Spotlight: Gramya Sansthan
Program organizers with Gramya Sansthan in Varanasi use Asha funds to put together care packages to distribute to community members.
Each package typically includes:
- 10 Kg Rice
- 10 Kg Flour
- 5 Kg Potatoes
- 5 Kg Dal
- 1 Kg Mustard Oil
The care package also includes essentials such as Salt, Soap, Detergent and a Mask.
Gramya has been able to support 600 students over the past month costing only $18 per care package. Asha Chicago has been able to provide $10,800 in funding.
Gramya had also mobilized early on in the pandemic to deliver needed PPE to the community. The local organizers held a mass event to distribute masks and cleaning supplies. They are also petitioning the local governing bodies to get to help the communities in the trial areas (specifically with the food ration scheme, approved by the Govt. of India, that has not yet reached these remote areas)
You can do your part to help — donate to support COVID-19 relief work now. Even just $12 could feed a family for a month.Below are the details:
